：This talk will focus on MEMS and nanostructuring of smart materials for integrated sensors, microactuators, microfluidic and lab-on-chip applications. These smart materials include (1) piezoelectric materials for acoustofluidics and lab-on-chips with multiple functions such as biosensing, particle/cell concentrating and sorting, patterning, pumping, mixing, nebulization and jetting; (2) shape memory alloys and microactuators; nanocomposite shape memory polymer; (3) nanostructured oxides for sensing and energy applications.
TiNi shape memory film based micro-actuators are becoming actuator of choice in many aspects in the rapidly growing field of MEMS, microsurgery, and biomedical applications. Design, fabrication and applications of various TiNi thin film based microdevices, such as microgrippers, microswitches, microvalves and pumps, microsensors have been discussed, including next-generation and low cost shape memory polymer and nanocomposites for microsurgery and tissue/cell applications.
Piezoelectric film based acoustic wave devices have long been proposed as bio-sensors, based on the biomolecule recognition/frequency-shift using highly sensitive surface acoustic waves and film bulk acoustic waves. The innovative ideas have recently been proposed to use acoustic waves generated on thin film acoustic devices on low cost, flexible or even deformable substrates, in order to generate significant acoustic streaming, fluid mixing, pumping, ejection, atomization, particle or cell concentration or manipulations, etc. The potential to fabricate an integrated, flexible, mass produced lab-on-a-chip diagnostic system based on these thin film acoustic wave technologies is discussed.
Prof Fu has extensive experience in smart thin film/materials, biomedical microdevices, lab-on-chip, micromechanics, MEMS, nanotechnology, sensors and microfluidics. He has established a worldwide reputation from his pioneer research work on shape memory films, piezoelectric thin films, nanostructured composite/films for applications in MEMS, sensing and energy applications.
His research has been funded by Engineering and Physics Science Research Council (EPSRC), Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, Carnegie Trust, UK Fluidic Network, Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scottish Government, Scottish Union Physics Alliance (SUPA), Nuffield Foundation, Innovate UK/Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), AWE-UK, Erasmus, Scottish Sensor System Centre/CENSIS, Scottish Funding Council and National Science Foundation of China, China Institute of Engineering Research, etc.
He published over 310 science citation index (SCI) journal papers, 2 books, 20 book chapters, and over 120 conference papers. His current SCI H-index is 39 with over 6200 citations.
He has extensive teaching experience in three UK universities with the teaching modules covering Mechanical Engineering, Material Science/Engineering, Physics, renewable energy, and Electrical Engineering. He has actively involved in departmental/institutional development in the past 10 years, and served various duties in teaching, research, social and networking activities.
Being principle supervisor, he has six PhD students successfully graduated in UK universities. He is regular reviewers for various research council grants, including EPSRC, European Research grants (COST and FP7), Singapore Government/Research Council grants, Welcome Trust and Cambridge Trust/College Funding, etc. He has also been invited as external PhD thesis reviewers worldwide and reviewed more than 20 PhD thesis.
He is now served as the Regional President of International Thin Film Society, and Regional Secretary of Taiwan Thin Film Society, and Committee Member of Chinese Society of Heat Treatment and Metallurgy/Chinese Society of Surface Engineering.
